Classes at Balmoral Pottery Teaching Studio are small (6 to 9 approximately) so students receive plenty of one to one attention. Classes focus on skills & creative development.

Balmoral Pottery is situated in the Southern Highlands 20 minutes North of Mittagong (about 1.5 hours South of Sydney). The pottery is located in a bushland setting in Balmoral Village. It is a unique and beautiful place to work with clay.

Sandy Lockwood has been making pots and teaching for over 30 years. Her teaching experience ranges from beginners to postgraduate level and over many areas of ceramics practice. Her work is widely and internationally recognized.

Unfortunately I will not be running any more making classes during 2017.  I have a number of commitments that are claiming my time.  I am due to hand in my PhD early 2018 so this is keeping me very busy.  Additionally, I am presenting at wood firing conferences in the USA and Queensland and as well I need to make and fire work for my annual open weekend. I look forward to offering classes again during 2018 and I will post first semester offerings on my web site during the first week of December 2017. I appreciate your interest and I look forward to meeting up in 2018.

September 2017

Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th.
Unload Wednesday 27th

This is a 4 day workshop of three days loading and firing and one day to unpack when the kiln has cooled.

In this workshop students will be introduced to the process of wood firing. Students should bring bisque fired work. A number of glazes will be provided here for the glazing of work. Students will learn about various aspects of preparing, loading and firing a wood kiln. The kiln will be unloaded and the results evaluated when the kiln has cooled.

Each student will be able to fire a number of works.

Fees: $660 incl GST (This includes glaze, prepared wood and preheat gas)

A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required to secure a place.

I’ll send out further information on the workshop including clays and slips to possibly use, forms to consider, etc. once I have your confirmation and deposit. And if you need, I can send you some local accommodation options.

Please feel free to contact me by phone or email if you have any questions.
